White, pink and brown noise distribute sound energy differently across frequencies. You may prefer one immediately, but there is no reliable basis here for declaring a single colour the best sleep sound for everyone.

How white, pink and brown noise sound different

WhiteA brighter, steady hiss
PinkLess emphasis on high frequencies
BrownA deeper, bass-heavy rumble

These are broad listening descriptions. Pink noise places more emphasis on lower frequencies than white noise, and brown noise emphasises them further. The speaker or earbuds you use will also affect the result. [source]

Which noise color is best for sleep?

A 2021 systematic review found very low-certainty evidence that continuous noise improves sleep. The included studies differed considerably in their methods and reported mixed effects. [source] Enjoying a sound is a useful personal observation; it cannot establish what happens to your sleep stages.

Is rain white noise or brown noise?

A rain recording is an environmental sound, and its frequency balance can change with the rain, surface and microphone. Its title alone cannot classify it as white, pink or brown noise. Choose by listening to the actual track.

Compare the sounds at a quiet level

Try a short sample of each at a quiet, comfortable level while you are awake. Adjust each sample separately, since recordings can differ in loudness. Notice whether you keep paying attention to it: a dramatic wave crash or obvious loop may be more engaging than you want at bedtime.

Keep your first comparison simple. Use the same playback device and avoid changing your whole evening routine at the same time. You can record “pleasant,” “distracting” or “preferred silence” without turning the exercise into a sleep experiment.

If you decide to use audio at bedtime, you can also choose a timer where one is available. Continuous overnight playback is one possible setting, not a requirement for enjoying a sound before bed.
